Third in the world By Jacob Page Marlborough duo John Derry and Brent Hefford have finished third in the World Jet Boat Championships on the rivers of Canada. The pair got stronger as the 10-day event went on, overcoming turbine and mechanical issues which bookended their campaign to stand on the podium. John and Brent were the top Kiwi team and were 10 minutes behind the eventual winner Rick Hollingworth, from Canada.

often take each other out. “I thought coming over here we would be in the top five so third and to be on the podium was a good result but the competitor inside always wants to be Number one. “I think we left our run a bit late,” John says. “If we’d started the event quicker then we wouldn’t have had to race so hard at the end to hold on to our place.” Unbeknown to John and Brent, the
team mechanics were holding the boat together in the final days. “We had some gearbox issues which I knew about but one of the guys has just come clean over a beer about the extent of it…We were lucky to finish in the end. John says the rivers, while wider than he is used too in New Zealand were excellent to race on. “The rivers were in really good condition, probably the best I’ve
raced on over here.” The duo’s boat ‘Kiwi Going Places’ will not come home with the team as the World Championships will be held in America next year, though John has yet to decide if he will compete. He will return to Blenheim later this week and start organising the New Zealand Marathon Championships which will be on the West Coast and finish in Blenheim in October.
Armistice remembered Marlborough RSA Members and special guests gathered at the Clubs of Marlborough to commemorate the Korean War Armistice earlier this week. Monday’s event marked 62 years since New Zealand’s involvement in the Korean War became peacekeeping-orientated rather than military. Guests included Pastor Joseph Hun Kim and New Zealand Korean Veterans Association Marlborough representative Ian Blissett. Mayor Alistair Sowman says the Korean conflict is slowly being shaken of its tag as ‘The Forgotten War.’ “The men and women involved should be proud of being a part of that history.” Sowman also referred to gunner Ray MacDonald, a Marlburian born in Havelock who was one of the first New Zealanders to die in the conflict. MacDonald died at Majon-ni on November 16, 1952. The Korean War began on June 25, 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea, and ended on July 27, 1953 with the armistice signing. Triple delight for Peter Ray Homes
By Adam Poulopoulos A Marlborough building company was awarded the gold-silver-bronze trifecta at the Nelson, Marlborough, and West Coast Registered Master Builders 2015 House of the Year awards. Peter Ray Homes won gold in the $300,000-$400,000 new home category for a build in Witherlea. They added silver in the $400,000$500,000 new home category, and bronze in the up to $300,000 new home class. The silver home is also in Witherlea, while the bronze house is located in Springlands. The annual awards ceremony was held at the Clubs of Marlborough on Saturday night. Business co-owner Rowan Lee says the gold home was built for owners with the goal of getting sunlight in every room. “It was the main focus and we achieved it. “The owners had a modern house in the past which wouldn’t capture the sun, and they went to other

Youth Fund open The 2016 Youth Fund is open for applications and MP Stuart Smith is promoting the opportunity to local young people and youth leaders in the Kaikoura electorate. “I encourage constituents with ideas for youth-driven projects to apply for a share of the Government’s $200,000 Youth Fund. “We have many outstanding young people in our community and this fund supports activities that develop their decision-making and leadership skills,” Smith says. there was a high quality of workmanship throughout the Marlborough region. For uniformity all houses in a single category were judged by the same two judges throughout the country. They were judged in two broad categories: with workmanship attributing 65 per cent and design, functionality and style the other 35.
PJ heading home after good progress By Jacob Page Former Marlborough Boys’ College head boy PJ Lupi will be flown back to New Zealand today as he continues to impress doctors with the speed of his recovery. PJ was left in a coma after a scooter accident in Phuket on July 6. Friends, family and well-wishers helped raised more than $150,000 for his care on a Givealittle page in 48 hours to help the family pay for the best possible medical care and to take the financial burden
off a potential flight home. On a post on the Givealittle
page, PJ’s father Paul Sr says progress continues to be made. “He is much more aware of the activity going on around him and will attempt to thwart the nurses when they attempt some of the caregiving that he objects to.” PJ has also gone for brief walks around his room with the help of his brother Mark and friend Matt. “Mark and Matt felt sorry for him and took him for a walk around his room. This consisted of propping him under each shoulder to take some of
his weight and allowing him to shuffle his feet forward. He loved it and had three walks before he tired of it,” the update read. Family had been told such progress would not be possible so soon after the accident, so it seems PJ is continuing to make strong progress. PJ will fly into Christchurch today where he will be going through a rehabilitation program to try to restore memory and lost synaptic functions.
Halfway house for men possible Crossroads Marlborough Charitable Trust are looking into the possibility of opening a halfway house for homeless single men in Blenheim. The trust is looking to set up a home for men to live in while they got help accessing medical and social assistance. They would first have to apply to the Government to be recognised as a community housing provider.
Police nab $200,000 worth of drugs A Wellington man was arrested in Blenheim last week when more than $200,000 worth of drugs, including methamphetamine, were found in his car. Po lice found 16 6 grams of methamphetamine and pills believed to be ecstasy packaged in plastic bags in the car boot. A further 40g of cannabis and 12g of methamphetamine were found in the back seat of the car, as well as a shot gun.

Marlborough has one of the lowest electricity switching rates in the country, despite having high potential savings available, according to new figures released by the Electricity Authority. The figures estimate last year 3500 Marlborough households switched electricity providers, and could have saved $3,622,461 or an average annual saving of $172. Electricity Authority chief executive Carl Hansen encouraged Marlborough households to check their deal. “The average annual saving that Marlborough households could find is well above average, so it’s important that local consumers are aware of the benefits of shopping around. “The New Zealand electricity market is very competitive. There is a wide range of
deals and plans available to suit different families and lifestyles,” he says. “In the Marlborough region alone we saw two new retailers enter the market last year, offering locals more options than ever before.” The new brands available to Marlborough residents are Glo-Bug and Energy Online. Local consumers now have up to 11 brands to choose from, depending on their network. “Its important consumers realise that their choice of retailer makes no difference to the reliability of their electricity supply – those outcomes are affected by the performance of their local distribution network and by Transpower, and is the same regardless of which retailer consumers choose,” Carl says.

“We then identified how we would achieve those priorities, often in very practical terms,” Barry says. “Different working groups have already been working on some of these areas – like recycling, urban and public space design, encouraging a better retail sector, projects like encouraging views to be brought forward on the library, and working on tourism promotion. “The Working Groups, which include people from throughout the Picton community, will continue to work on the specific projects and advocacy. But now, we are starting to look into big picture strategies and ideas, with the Strategic Plan as a guideline to what we want to achieve.” Picton Smart & Connected plans to hold a public meeting in early September to communicate its activities and initiatives to date, and gather feedback on what else the community would like focused on. Big picture vision sits alongside smaller activities in the Picton Smart and Connected Steering Group’s Strategic Plan. Matt hopes it is third time lucky Matt Duggan from Cloudy Bay has won Marlborough Young Viticulturist of the Year 2015. Six contestants battled it out at the Marlborough Research Centre in Blenheim with their final challenge being to deliver a speech to over 100 people at the evening dinner at the Scenic Circle Hotel. It is the third time Matt has won the award Brenton O’Riley, from Giesen finished second and Anthony Walsh from Constellation came third. Contestants completed a wide range of activities including questions on pruning, trellising, pests & diseases, tractor maintenance, HR negotiation, budgeting and irrigation as well as having an interview and a quick fire buzzer round. This annual competition is now in its 10th year and has become an important fixture in the viticultural calendar, giving young Viticulturists the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge as well as make a name for themselves within the industry. Matt goes through to the National Final with a lot of experience and a real determination to win the national title of Viticulturist of the Year. At 29-years-old this is his last opportunity to qualify for entry.

He will be competing against Regional Finalists from Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough and Martinborough and the National Final will be held in conjunction with Bragato from the 25 to the 27th of August in Hawke’s Bay. The national winner will be awarded a $5000 travel voucher, one year’s full lease of a Hyundai Santa Fe,$2000 cash, wine glasses and leadership training. They will also secure a place in the Young Horticulturist of the Year competition representing the viticultural industry.
Significant marine sites in jeopardy The first year of monitoring a series of significant marine sites in the Marlborough Sounds suggests large areas of deterioration and an urgent need for more formal protection. A report prepared by a Nelson marine biologist, jointly funded by council and the Department of Conservation and presented to the Marlborough District Council’s Environment Committee, makes for alarming reading, says committee chairman Peter Jerram. The report suggests that of nine sites, two had disappeared altogether while seven had diminished in size. Overall, there had been a decline of 71.6 per cent in the size of the sites over a four year period of monitoring. Sedimentation, caused by flooding rivers washing material out to sea and smothering the local habitat, was a significant cause of the damage along with the physical disturbance of the sites caused by dredging and anchoring. At present only one significant site in the Marlborough Sounds is protected as a marine
reserve. The report was a wakeup call as the speed of deterioration was frightening. “Losing 70 per cent of the area of significant sites in only four years tells us there are major problems in the way we are treating the sounds.” Council’s Regional Planning and Development Committee will consider the ecological report and determine what kind of protection council’s new resource management plan should deliver for these specific seabed sites and on the wider surrounding area. But councillor Jerram says the matter should not be left for the council to deal with alone. “We have a new plan coming out which will address this issue for remaining sites of ecological significance but the inner and outer sounds in particular are desperately fragile environments and it really needs the Ministry of Primary Industries to engage with council and the community to save our sensitive sea beds from on-going decline.”

Dear Ed, Every time I turn into Hutcheson Street or come the other way into town, staring me in my dial is the concrete eyesore of the new theatre. Shows are still happening at the Civic Theatre and I bet hardly any will be full. It is not just the theatre although I bet the final cost will be well over estimate. The parking building, the plush loos by the silly park in Queen Street, over-priced bus shelters and the biggest worry, the growth in staff. The mayor praised the soon-to-retire chief executive for financial prudence. Eh? I was told under the long term plan MDC is budgeting for debt to rise from $30 million to $100 million in next three years? Believe it or not? Robert Ripley
Dear Ed, I got stopped at a check point in Dodson Street, and my diesel mileage was a bit over. The officer politely pointed it out. I apologised and he said with a smile, whip around and get it righted. His manner was courteous and friendly. Similarly with another officer who stopped me in Lee Street for doing a bit over 50 km/hour. He gave me a friendly warning and was similarly friendly and polite.

Dear Ed, No wonder people shop outside of Blenheim. Recently I ordered a part from I shop I had frequented for the past nine years. I gave all info needed, ie part year, size, make and model. one on one with the Sun
One final voyage Electrical engineer Noel Nielsen was working on board the first sailing of the Arahura ferry across the Cook Strait in December 1983 and he will be on board for her final crossing today. Noel talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about life on the sea, why a musical instrument never goes astray on board and why there will never be another ship like the Arahura. Noel Nielsen has given his seal of approval to the Arahura and he would know having done thousands of trips over his 32-year association with the Interislander ship. “I was one of the chosen,” Noel says about being on the maiden voyage. “Initially there was a chance I was going to go to Denmark to standby the building of the Arahura but I was picked to be part of the crew when it came out here.” Noel says he loves the variety of the job, despite the long hours. “I look after all things on the ship that run off electricity…One day I could be changing light bulbs, the next day I could be head down, bum up in the guts of the mainframe computer that runs the engine room.” He says he can still remember his first impressions of the ship. “In those days I was living in Picton and the Arahura arrived for its first fitting on the wharf and I recall standing watching it come in and thinking ‘hell, that’s a big ship’ because I had worked on the previous ships for the company since I started in 1979 and none of them were that size. “It was quite impressive standing at the end of the link span at the end of the wharf, looking along the lines of the ship and looking up to 10 decks to the bridge.” The 69-year-old grew up on and around boats so it was just a matter of time before he made a career out of it. “I was brought up on the sea, born and bred on Stewart Island and we had fishing boats and oyster boats in the family and as kids our Christmas and New Year was always on a boat. “We got dinghy’s not push-bikes for our presents…Dad would take a boat out of service for the six-week holiday period and we would spend our time floating around Stewart Island and Fiordland.” Noel says he has mixed emotions about the final crossing,
“It’s a nostalgia thing, it’s sad to see the ship go. “I doubt in the world today that we will see a ship as well built as the Arahura again. “The ship was built with a lot of redundancy in it, for example there are four engines, driving four generators which drive four propulsion electric motors which drive the ship along. If we had major breakdowns we could still get Arahura home on one engine, one motor and one propeller.” He says he’s seen his share of shenanigans over the years. “We’ve done our share of sea rescues…Small craft try to ride in our wake and get a smooth trip all the way to Picton which sometimes ended in rescue efforts. Noel says he has had some good times with music on the ship too. “I’d often go up with my accordion on to Monkey Island, which is on top
of the ship and play up there if it was a Christmas or a New Year’s Eve. “One of our engineers, who played the saxophone, used to go down to the rail deck to play it, however once he was making his way up when the lift got stuck between decks and the alarm wasn’t noticed. “When a colleague finally heard him playing his sax and alerted people to it he was playing ‘Please Release Me’.” Noel took voluntary redundancy in 2001 and moved to Invercargill but after three years got an urgent call to return due to a shortage of electrical engineers and he has been working when needed ever since. “I still really enjoy it and my seagoing medical certificate expires in December and I don’t know if I’ll pass the new stringent testing that is being introduced but the company has indicated they’d like me to carry on for a couple more years.”

The Marlborough Breastfeeding Network are partnering with Women’s Health Action to coordinate The Big Latch On event for local breastfeeding mums this Friday. To be held at the St Christophers Hall in Redwoodtown at 10am, this event is held in venues throughout New Zealand and overseas. Local mums are encouraged to attend with their supporters where they will simultaneously breastfeed their babies. A midwife and lactation consultant will be present on the day to offer breastfeeding advice and support. The Big Latch On registration will begin at 10am, with the actual latch on taking place at 10:30am. The MC’s for this event will be Plunket representatives. Morning tea and refreshments will be provided by Plunket volunteers.

Tandem feeding Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk For the past two years the Sun has followed the journey of Blenheim midwife Tai Dixon who shared her ups and downs of breastfeeding daughter Iona. What makes her journey even more special now is the recent addition of baby Lucia, born July 17. Tai is now successfully ‘tandem feeding’ a newborn and a toddler, and is happy to share her experiences with other women. Iona, now aged two, has weaned herself to one feed a day which she prefers in the mornings. Although Tai’s supply dramatically decreased during her pregnancy, Iona still continued to feed. “I’m nervous of having enough milk this time around but there are things that can be done to improve my chances. “Antenatal hand expressing worked for me, I have a small storage of frozen milk if I need it. That’s something I recommend women talk to their midwife about,” she says. Tai’s supply and the content of the breastmilk changed in pregnancy but she says by feeding Iona it has helped her to avoid the initial breastfeeding issues she experienced. “It’s still early days but so far I haven’t had any issues. ‘Extended’ breastfeeding is something Tai wishes to raise awareness of. “I am hoping that when Iona is ready she will stop herself, but there’s no rush for that. “The World Health Organisation recom-

Water polo growth continues Hundreds of Marlborough kids are stronger and safer in the water due to a three-year programme to teach them aquatic skills through water polo. Run by Stadium 2000 with funding help from Sport Tasman through Kiwisport grants and coaching input from Water Polo New Zealand, the programme has gone from strength to strength. From modest beginnings more than 230 youngsters nine to 16 from around the province now play in the weekly flippa ball and water polo leagues at the Blenheim aquatic centre in Kinross St. A modified and introductory version of water polo for those aged 9 to 13, flippa ball is not restricted to those who are capable swimmers with two of three grades played in water where they can touch the bottom of the pool. Programme director Kirsty Mat-
tison says the number of flippa ball teams had grown from six to 19 over the three years, and a more challenging grade has been added where they played in water two metres deep but were allowed flotation devices. There are also male and female water polo competitions for older and stronger kids, which attract up to 100 players a week. Kirsty says the programme had been successful in keeping young people in aquatics at a time when participation by those of secondary school age usually dropped off. “Flippa ball provides a fun way for children to learn aquatic skills, team work and basic ball skills. We have seen improved water confidence and survival skills, such as being able to tread water in the 2m deep pool.” She says the programme had spurred further growth of the
sport, with Marlborough Boys’ College now including it as part of their PE curriculum and sending teams away to interschool tournaments. Stadium 2000 had also run youth tournaments with Canterbury club Wharenui. This year the programme, which runs for 37 weeks, will cost about $35,000 to run, with Kiwisport contributing 30 per cent and the rest coming from user fees. Kirsty says Sport Tasman’s Kiwisport funding had been invaluable but was due to end, however, other funding would be sought so the programme could continue and player fees – which range from $5 to $6 a week, kept low. Winter league back in action Last Thursday evening saw the second week of Marlborough Volleyball’s Fairweathers’ Senior Winter League at Stadium 2000. Conscripts finally came out victors in the third set with a 29-27 score. Although the 3-0 score doesn’t represent it, Bella’s Team had a close game with USO Fiafia. Bella’s Team had a commanding lead in the first set, but Uso stormed home 25-19. The second and third sets was full of positive energy and a good time was had by all with some great spikes from USO, who won both the next sets 25-15 and 25-17. The last Premier Grade game, between Treefellas and Pure Samoa, was won by Pure Samoa 3-0.

One dress size down What has felt like a repetitive two months are starting to pay off. One week ago I tried on a dress that I purchased in April. It was a size 18 (pictured). It is now too big for me. So as a form of reward I revisited the same shop and purchased a new dress of a similar style. Instead of a size XL I left with a size L. My personal coach Jane Butler has encouraged me to hang up this dress where I can see it every morning as a visual reminder of my progress. For me that is exciting as I have felt all this time nothing was happening. I had noticed my eating habits were improving, and that my body strength was increasing but I hadn’t noticed any size difference until now. It’s another step towards my dream wedding dress. Tomorrow I have my monthly weigh-in and measurements with my personal trainer Emma Burrell so I look forward to sharing those results in my next blog. In addition to my clothing sizes, I have also noticed my meal portions have decreased which was one of my main goals. Eating a small meal on a bread and butter plate feels normal now, as does drinking around three litres of water throughout the day. My goal for the next two weeks is to increase my exercise so I don’t hit a plateau.
On the wedding front, I was inspired by the recent Bride of the Year Show and after speaking with some of the brides, I went away with plenty of great ideas. It was great to see first hand how different gowns looked, how they styled their hair and how they matched their jewellery. Exciting times.

McCaffrey in the medals By Jacob Page Marlborough rower Corey McCaffrey earned silver at the 2015 Under-23 World Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. McCaffrey was part of the men’s coxed four which won a silver medal. Italy popped their bow in front with New Zealand in hot pursuit in the A final. New Zealand hit the front through the first 500 metre marker but Italy did not fade. The front running crews continued to race neck and neck through to the halfway point. At the 1000m point New Zealand had the slight advantage with a canvas length lead. Italy pushed on to take half a boat length margin at the 1500m with New Zealand still holding onto second with Turkey and Australia closing in. The Kiwi crew of Louis van Velthooven, Drikus Conradie, Cameron Webster, McCaffrey and coxswain Sam Bosworth showed a tremendous sprint to pull almost level with the Italians into the finish line. Italy came away with the gold in 6:24.57 with New Zealand claiming silver in 6:24.78, bronze went to Germany.

Rally Finland a favourite for kiwi duo By Jacob Page New Zealand rally duo Hayden Paddon and Blenheim’s John Kennard head to this week’s Rally Finland determined to keep doing what they’ve been doing in recent World Rally Championship events. “We’ll go in with the same approach that we took to Poland, to try to be consistent and try to be fast,” Paddon says. “It’s a rally we’re familiar with, this being our sixth time there, but because it is so fast, the gaps are a lot closer and you’ve got to fight pretty hard for every 10th of a second. So we’ve got a few improvements from Poland to try and make.” The Finnish event, running July 30 to August 2, is one of Paddon’s favourite rallies. “It’s a rally I’m quite comfortable with. The
